Today
Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Okay, so Im telling my age. For those of you too young to remember, that statement was stuck on posters, plaques, plates, purses, hippie vans, clothes, signs, picture frames, and macrame back last century, just to name a few! (hmmm 70s if I recall!)
And you know, I never really got the significance of it. But as I’ve gotten older, I am realizing just how true and significant it really is. Today is another opportunity to do things right, to enjoy the things you didn’t have time for yesterday and to allow God’s presence to change you right this very minute from glory to glory.
I think the Bible even says it better–Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Today is significant because of His mercy. Today is significant because He is a compassionate God. Today is significant because of His faithfulness. I love today. Yesterday is what coulda been, shoulda been, mighta been. Tomorrow brings no promise other than “if tomorrow dawns” but today–today is present, it is now, it is here.
The Bible is full of “today”. Jesus told Zaccheus, “Today, salvation has come to your house.” To the thief on the cross it was, “today” you will be with me in paradise. “Today is the time” Hebrews says so don’t harden your hearts.
Too many people live in the past with regret and too many spend all their energy worrying about things that haven’t even happened. What a waste! So, forget about yesterday–it’s over. Don’t worry about tomorrow–you may not see it. Today–it really is the first day of the rest of your life. Live today to the full for the gospel sake.
Thy kingdom IS come, Thy will be done! I challenge you–this is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it! PB
